Surgery meets Sci-Fi. India’s first hybrid neuro-theatre merges CT scans and surgery in one room.

Tamil Nadu has set a new benchmark in public healthcare infrastructure with the inauguration of India's first fully integrated hybrid neurosurgery theatre at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility brings the diagnostic power of a CT scanner directly into the operating room, allowing surgeons to perform scans mid-surgery without moving the patient. Typically, if a surgeon needs to check if a tumor has been fully removed, the patient must be stitched up and wheeled to a radiology department—a risky and time-consuming process.

In this hybrid theatre, the scanner slides over the operating table on rails, providing real-time imaging that guides the surgeon's hand with sub-millimeter precision. This capability is critical for complex brain and spinal surgeries, where the margin for error is non-existent. Officials highlighted that while such facilities exist in elite private hospitals, making this "sci-fi" level technology available in a government hospital ensures that even the poorest patients have access to world-class neurosurgical care.
